Fire Island Beaches
Over 800,000 tourists flock Fire Island's beaches every year, and not without reason. Fire Island is a barrier island sprawled along the coast of Long Island, stretching over 32 miles. The most common way to reach Fire Island is via the Fire Island ferries which have destination points up and down the Island departing from Bay Shore. Fire Island is easily accessible from New York City for those who do not have a car as it is a fairly short trip from Penn Station to Bay Shore, a quick van or taxi ride to the ferries and then about a 20-30 minute ferry ride to your summer solice.
Fire Island is famous for its nude beaches including Lighthouse Beach, Cherry grove, Cherry Grove, Smith Point, Watch Hill, The Pines etc. However, Fire Island also offers perfect spots for vacationing with family and friends.
Perhaps the biggest draw for Fire Islanders to this beautiful retreat is that there are virtually no cars. It is a place for walking, bicycles and little red wagons. Even shoes are optional.
Fire Island National Seashore is a favourite destination for beach lovers of all ages, who are seen collecting shells, building sand castles, walking with their wagons and clamming here. Fire Island beaches are dotted with restaurants, cafes and boutiques.
While most beaches in Fire Island promise a buzzing night life and a multitude of beach activities, Lonelyville, living up to its name, provides the much needed solitude and quietude. This peaceful community consists of an array of picturesque beach cottages and is conveniently close to the party scenes of Fire Island.
Ocean Bay Park is home to Flynn's and draws a young, singles crowd all summer long. While Cherry Grove is known for it's GLBT community. Point O' Woods attracts families and Ocean Beach offers a multitude of parlors, boutiques and eateries for those looking for a beach break.
Other communities of Fire Island include Ocean Bay Park, Ocean Beach, Point O' Woods, Seaview, Robert Moses State park, Summer Club, Robin's Nest, each boasting of its own unique charm in the form of activities and landscape.
